October is National Women’s Small Business Month and according to the North Dakota Women’s Business Center, North Dakota has every reason to celebrate. Center for Technology & Business (CTB), which operates the North Dakota Women’s Business Center, has announced that after tying the District of Columbia last year for the top states with the fastest growth in the number, employment and revenues of women-owned firms, in 2015 North Dakota now officially ranks number one.

The 2015 State of Women-Owned Businesses report, commissioned by American Express OPEN, lists the statistics to prove it. Since 1997 North Dakota has experienced an 89.3% growth in number of women-owned firms, a 234.7% increase in revenues from women-owned firms and a 77.3% growth in employment by women-owned firms. According to the US Small Business Administration, women-owned businesses are one of the fastest growing segments of the small business community and North Dakota is no exception.

Across the state, 36 businesses are recognized for receiving the official status of being a North Dakota Certified Women Owned Business. WOB Certification denotes that a woman (or women) has majority ownership and control of a business entity (at least 51%). This certification is conducted by CTB who is solely authorized by the North Dakota Department of Commerce to examine the applicants’ documentation and qualify the applicant for status as a Certified Women Owned Business in the State of North Dakota.

The National Women’s Business Council notes that women-owned firms spur economic growth and investing in these firms goes beyond social responsibility to have profound economic impacts on the U.S. economy. Women-owned firms in the U.S. employ 7.8 million people and are responsible for approximately $1.4 trillion in sales annually. Recognizing and serving women owned firms, as well as other entrepreneurs throughout North Dakota, has always been the focus of CTB. Now, as the result of a recent merger with the IDEA Center in Bismarck, CTB will be increasing resources and streamlining services for entrepreneurs and small businesses across the state. The public can expect to see more availability for individual business advising services, increased range of program offerings, and a stronger voice for entrepreneurial needs in the region.
