National Small Business Week 2015

North Dakota Women Owned Businesses Celebrate

May 4-8 is National Small Business Week and a time to celebrate this growing business demographic in North Dakota. According to the SBA, small businesses represent 96 percent of all employers in North Dakota thus making them central to the health and well-being of the state. A state's ability to generate small businesses impacts gross state product, personal income, and employment.

One group of small business owners that are calling on their communities to be aware of the value that small businesses have locally and on the economy as a whole are the North Dakota Certified Women Owned Businesses (WOB). WOB Certification denotes that a woman (or women) has majority ownership and control of a business entity (at least 51%). This certification is conducted by Center for Technology & Business (CTB) who is solely authorized by the ND Department of Commerce to examine the applicants’ documentation and qualify the applicant for status as a Certified Women Owned Business in the State of North Dakota.

This elite group of women owned businesses include:

  • Advanced Virtual Office Services

According to the latest data from the Census Bureau Survey of Business Owners, approximately one fourth of businesses in North Dakota are woman owned. Although that might seem like a small percentage, the 2013 State of Women Owned Businesses Report by American Express places North Dakota as one of the states with the fastest growth in the number, employment and revenues of women owned businesses.

During National Small Business Week, CTB encourages you to patronize local businesses and support the small businesses that are invested in your community’s future. For more information, visit the North Dakota Certified Women Owned Business Directory.

Nationally, SBA is hosting a series of free webinars to help celebrate and you can tune in for the live-streaming webcasts of all events as they happen.
