51 North Dakota Women Owned Businesses Celebrate

National Small Business Week

May 20-26 is National Small Business Week and a time to celebrate this growing business demographic in North Dakota. According to the SBA, small businesses represent 96 percent of all employers in North Dakota thus making them central to the health and well-being of the state. A state's ability to generate small businesses impacts gross state product, personal income, and employment.

One group of small business owners that are calling on their communities to be aware of the value that small businesses have locally and on the economy as a whole are the 51 ND Certified Women Owned Businesses (WOB). WOB Certification denotes that a woman (or women) has majority ownership and control of a business entity (at least 51%). This certification is conducted by Center for Technology & Business (CTB) who is solely authorized by the ND Department of Commerce to examine the applicants’ documentation and qualify the applicant for status as a Certified Women Owned Business in the State of North Dakota.

Between 1997 and 2007, the number of women-owned businesses grew by 44 percent, twice the pace of male-owned businesses. These women-owned businesses added roughly 500,000 jobs between 1997 and 2007, when the rest of privately-held firms lost jobs.

As part of the national celebration of Small Business Week in Washington, D.C., SBA is honoring the nation’s top small businesses. Among those being honored is North Dakota’s Small Business Person of the Year and a ND Certified WOB, Heather Jones of City Air Mechanical. While in D.C., Jones will have the opportunity to meet with top administration officials, congressional representatives and national business leaders.

“This is the highest honor bestowed by SBA each year in celebration of the outstanding achievements, challenges and contributions of our small businesses. We are proud to have Heather Jones representing North Dakota” said Deb Eslinger, executive director of Center for Technology & Business. CTB operates the women’s business center for North Dakota and nominated Jones for the award.

During National Small Business Week, CTB encourages you to patronize local businesses and support the small businesses that are invested in your community’s future. For more information on these 51 businesses, visit the ND Certified WOB Directory.
